Two Women Arrested in Connection with Attack on BJP Leader in Srinagar

Two women, both residents of Budgam, were arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack on the BJP leader’s residence last week in Srinagar outskirts.

A police guard was killed when militants attacked the house of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Mohammad Anwar Khan at Nowgam bypass in the outskirts of Srinagar city on April 1.

Khan was not present in the house when the attack took place.

Official sources said that after following various leads, police was able to arrest two girls, identified as Anjum Younis and Tabasum Maqbool, from Kanihama in the central Kashmir district of Budgam. “The girls were arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack,” they said.

They said one of the accused is a nursing student. “The duo was arrested by Police Station Nowgam in connection with a case (FIR number 27/2021 under Sections 307, 302, 392 of IPC and 7/27 of Arms Act) which was registered in connection with the attack on the residence of the BJP leader last week,” they said.

They said both the girls, who are lodged in Women Cell of police station Ram Bagh Srinagar, are being questioned.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar last week said that two of the four Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants involved in the attack were identified as Shahid Khursheed and Obaid Shafi.

Giving details about the attack, Mr Kumar had said that the CCTV footage of the area revealed that one of the militants, wearing a burqa, knocked on the door of the BJP leader with a woman’s voice to deceive the guard.

However, when the door was opened, two other militants fired indiscriminately while the fourth took the rifle of Constable Rameez Raja, who later succumbed to his injuries. UNI
