Inauguration of Udan Centre Markut to celebrate Unity between Army and Awam in Gurez

To celebrate the Unity between the Indian Army and Awam on the occasion of Rashtriya Ekta Divas, Inauguration of Udan Stitching Centre at Markut village was carried out by Mrs Gulnaaza Begum, Sarpanch Markut village. 

This initiative by the Indian Army in the winter cut off valley aims to skill and empower the home makers of the valley to earn an extra income for their households during the harsh winters. A group of 15 passionate women are presently undergoing the stitching and crewelling course, on completion of which they will be awarded certificates on behalf of the Snow Leopard Brigade of the Indian Army. 

The initiative also aims at preserving the traditional craft of Gurez and showcasing it to the world. The ladies were implored to make Gurezi caps, pillow covers, bedsheets and curtains with Kashmiri crewel work, Pherans and other handicrafts during the winters which will be collected by the Army and further be facilitated to be sold at AWWA shops in Srinagar and at the Log Hut Cafe at Dawar in Gurez.  

This congenial initiative is testimony to the unity and bond shared by the Army and the Awam in Gurez and will a stepping stone towards a Atmanirbhar Gurez by uplifting, skilling and providing self employment for the women folk of the valley.
