DEBATE COMPETITION ON INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY AT GOVT HIGH SCHOOL PAYERPORA

Going by the literal meaning, Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak and listen in a way that helps us communicate effectively. The United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared *8 September* as *International Litercay Day* in the year 1966. Since 1967, International Literacy Day (ILD) celebrations have taken place annually around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the literacy agenda toward a more literate and sustainable society.

To mark the occasion, A debate competition was held at *Govt High School, Payarpora*  by Indian Army in its continuous efforts to reach out to the youth with an initiative in mind to further tinker the young minds with a debate topic,  *"Working women can support their families in a better way"*.
A total of 12 students (6 boys & 6 girls)  participated in the debate from classes 8, 9 and 10. The students spoke for and against the motion and put up an exceptional display of oratory skills with both confidence and quality content. 

Best three speakers were awarded with cash prizes of 1500, 1000 and 500 each. It is a matter of great pride and signifies the very positive change and thus imperative to note that top three candidates came out to be girls. Also, to keep students encouraged and to reward them for their efforts, all participants were given appreciation prizes.
The pgme concluded with a patriotic song by the girls students and speech by the school principal on the benefits of education and literacy on society which is guiding the youth to tread the correct path of hard work and focus on becoming responsible citizens of the country.
