44 prisoners, including a woman, test positive for HIV in Haldwani jail

Over 40 prisoners, including a woman, have tested positive for HIV in Haldwani jail. This has stirred the prison authorities, who are not ready to talk about the matter. All 44 patients have been hospitalized.
“Twice a month, a team from the hospital goes to the prison for a routine checkup. All the prisoners who have mild problems are given medicine on the spot, while those with more severe problems are treated in the hospital. The jail administration also conducts routine check-up so that the HIV-infected prisoners can be treated on time. An antiretroviral therapy (ART) center has been set up for HIV patients,” said Dr Paramjit Singh of Sushila Tiwari Hospital, where the prisoners are being treated.

“Our team constantly checks prisoners in the jail and if any prisoner is found to be HIV positive, they are treated for free,” he said.

According to doctors, HIV-AIDS can be caused by several factors and it should not be seen clearly through any one aspect.

Officials are yet to speak about the matter.
