High-Ranking Assad-Era Judge Arrested Amid Deadly Clashes in Syria

"Military justice official Mohammed Kanjo Hassan, known for issuing death sentences at Saydnaya prison, detained as Tartus erupts in violence".

Syria's new authorities on Thursday arrested Mohammed Kanjo Hassan, a senior military justice official under the ousted regime of Bashar al-Assad, marking a significant development in the nation’s ongoing political upheaval.

The arrest, confirmed by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, came just a day after violent clashes erupted in the coastal province of Tartus, a stronghold of Assad’s former regime. Gunmen loyal to Kanjo Hassan resisted his detention, resulting in heavy confrontations that left multiple casualties. At least 20 of Hassan's associates were also taken into custody.

Hassan, infamous for issuing harsh sentences, including executions, at the notorious Saydnaya prison, is the most prominent figure arrested since Assad was ousted on December 8. His detention underscores the new authorities' intent to hold former regime figures accountable.

The fallout from this dramatic arrest is likely to intensify tensions in regions still loyal to Assad's regime, signaling a fraught path ahead for Syria's fragile political transition.
