The Awami Itihad Party (AIP) has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fast-track the construction of the Sadhna Pass Tunnel in Karnah Kupwara, a long-awaited project under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The proposed tunnel promises all-weather connectivity to the isolated regions of Karnah and Tangdhar, which face harsh winters that disrupt trade, tourism, and essential healthcare services.
AIP Chief Spokesperson Inam Un Nabi highlighted the tunnel’s transformative potential, urging the government to prioritize the project as a lifeline for the region. He also pushed for similar tunnels in Machil, Gurez, Vailoo-Kishtwar, and Shopian-Surankote, emphasizing that round-the-clock connectivity is crucial for economic growth and social cohesion across Jammu and Kashmir.
In addition to infrastructure demands, Inam Un Nabi appealed for the release of incarcerated MP Er Rasheed, who represents a significant democratic mandate while detained in Tihar Jail. “Releasing Er Rasheed would respect the people’s will and restore their faith in justice,” he stated. Rasheed’s leadership reflects the voice of 18 Assembly constituencies, covering 40% of the Valley’s population.
The AIP also renewed calls for the release of prisoners, the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, and urgent measures to address the region's grievances. "These steps are essential to fostering trust and bringing long-overdue stability to the region," Un Nabi concluded.
