Authorities Deny AIP Workers’ Peaceful Hunger Strike in Srinagar;Party Calls It an Attack on Democratic Rights, Questions Government's Intentions

Srinagar, Jan 31: In a controversial move, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has denied permission to Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) workers for a peaceful hunger strike at Lal Chowk, Srinagar. The protest was intended to express solidarity with AIP President & MP Baramulla Segment Engineer Rashid, who began his hunger strike today in Tihar Jail.
The decision has triggered outrage within AIP and among political observers, with party leaders accusing the administration of suppressing democratic rights.

Advocate GN Shaheen, AIP Vice President, openly questioned whether the denial was an administrative failure or a deliberate attempt to silence voices demanding justice.

"Is this a failure of the administration, or does the government fear the possible release of the champion of justice, Engineer Rashid?" Shaheen asked, calling the move undemocratic and unjust.

Suppression of Peaceful Dissent?

AIP leaders argue that the denial of a peaceful hunger strike is an attack on fundamental rights. They believe the authorities are using excessive restrictions to stifle political movements and prevent legitimate expressions of dissent.

"This is not just about permission. It is an attempt to suppress a peaceful and democratic movement. If a hunger strike in solidarity with an incarcerated leader is not allowed, then what remains of democratic freedoms?" Shaheen added.

Growing Public Outrage

The move has fueled tensions, with AIP supporters and human rights advocates condemning what they see as an authoritarian approach by the administration. Many believe this reflects a larger pattern of political suppression in the region.

Despite repeated attempts, authorities have yet to issue an official statement explaining the rationale behind their decision. Meanwhile, AIP has vowed to continue its struggle through democratic means, asserting that no amount of pressure will silence their demand for justice.

The development raises serious questions about the state of political freedoms in Jammu and Kashmir, leaving many wondering whether denying peaceful protests is a sign of weakness rather than strength on the part of the authorities.
