Police Nab Two Suspects with 8 kg of Smuggled Heroin; SSP Warns of Stern Action Against Drug Networks”

Srinagar, Jan 8 (TKG): In a decisive blow to drug trafficking in the Kashmir Valley, Srinagar police intercepted 8 kilograms of heroin, valued at over ₹32 crore in the international market, during a late-night checkpoint operation on Tuesday. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Srinagar, Imtiyaz Hussain, disclosed the details at a press briefing on Wednesday.

The bust unfolded at a police checkpoint near Barthana, Qamarwari, where a Sumo vehicle (JK05D 1837) was stopped. Upon inspection, officers led by Sub Inspector Imtiyaz Ahmad discovered the heroin concealed inside the vehicle. The suspects, Anas Ajaz Awan and Zahid Ahmed Sheikh, both hailing from Karnah in Kupwara district, were promptly arrested.

SSP Hussain revealed that the narcotics were smuggled into Kashmir from Pakistan and linked to a larger trafficking network. “We have identified key elements of this network, and further investigations are underway,” he stated.

The SSP also issued a stern warning: “Anyone involved in drug peddling will face the full force of the law. We are committed to eradicating this menace from our region.”

In a separate incident, Hussain revealed that a man impersonating a government official was arrested for allegedly coercing a woman into securing her husband’s release from police custody, where he was held on drug charges.

SSP Hussain called for public cooperation in combating drug trafficking and other crimes. “We urge citizens to report any suspicious activities. Together, we can ensure a safer and drug-free community,” he said.
