Where is the Voice of North Kashmir? MP Er Rashid Deserves Justice

Six Years Behind Bars—The Silencing of Baramulla’s Representative Must End

In the heart of North Kashmir lies Baramulla, a region brimming with resilience, hopes, and aspirations. Yet, for the past six years, its most prominent voice, Er Rashid, has been silenced, locked away in a jail cell. A Member of Parliament and an outspoken representative of the people, Rashid was not just a politician; he was the voice of the voiceless, a defender of the rights of the marginalized, and a beacon of hope in a politically volatile region.

But where is that voice now? The government, in its iron-fisted approach, has robbed the people of Baramulla of their representative. It’s been six long years, and the question remains: why is Er Rashid still behind bars? What threat does he pose that warrants such a prolonged incarceration without meaningful engagement with the people he was elected to serve?

North Kashmir’s residents are no strangers to struggle, but the absence of their elected leader has left a void that cannot be ignored. The government’s refusal to address his imprisonment reflects a broader pattern of disregarding the democratic rights of the people. This is not just about Er Rashid; it’s about the principle of representation. When a people’s representative is removed from the equation, the very fabric of democracy is threatened.

The silence from both state and central authorities on this matter is deafening. Baramulla's people deserve answers, and more importantly, they deserve action. The government must explain why a man entrusted with the responsibility of representing his constituency has been denied the opportunity to fulfill his duties.

Moreover, the people of North Kashmir must step up. This is not a time for complacency. It is a time for collective action, for demanding accountability, and for ensuring that their voices are heard. Er Rashid’s prolonged imprisonment is not just his personal plight—it is a matter of collective concern for every resident of Baramulla who believed in his vision and leadership.

In a democracy, representatives are meant to serve the people, not languish in jail under ambiguous circumstances. The government must either present concrete evidence justifying his continued incarceration or release him immediately, allowing him to return to his rightful place among the people of Baramulla.

The people of North Kashmir must catch up with the reality that their representative is absent at a time when they need him most. It’s time to demand his freedom and reassert the values of representation and accountability. Baramulla cannot afford to remain voiceless any longer.

Justice delayed is justice denied—both for Er Rashid and the people he represents.
