72 Hours of Darkness: Karnah Plunges into Blackout as PDD Negligence Sparks Outrage

Residents of North Kashmir’s remote subdivision suffer in freezing temperatures, question administration’s apathy

KARNAH, KUPWARA(TKG): For nearly 72 hours, the entire Karnah subdivision in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district has remained without electricity, leaving thousands of residents to battle harsh winter conditions in complete darkness. The prolonged power outage has sparked anger among locals, who blame the Power Development Department (PDD) for gross negligence and administrative failure.

Residents say the power supply was disrupted days ago due to faults in transmission lines, but despite repeated pleas, the authorities have failed to restore electricity. With temperatures plummeting, the blackout has severely impacted daily life, affecting students, businesses, and essential services.

“This is sheer negligence. For three days, we have been left in the dark, and the administration remains unmoved. The PDD’s inefficiency has made our lives miserable,” said a local shopkeeper while speaking to The Kashmir Graph.

Karnah, already cut off from the rest of the valley during heavy snowfall, faces multiple hardships due to its remote location. Residents say the continued indifference of the authorities towards power infrastructure in the region has only worsened their suffering.

Despite assurances from officials, there has been no immediate relief. Locals are demanding swift action and accountability from the PDD, warning of protests if power is not restored at the earliest.

As frustration grows, Karnah’s residents are left questioning whether the authorities would have reacted with the same indifference had this crisis unfolded in an urban area.
