Seeks Urgent All-Weather Connectivity for Karnah, Machil, and Gurez
New Delhi, February 14: In a crucial meeting held at the Parliament Chamber during his two-day parole, Member of Parliament Er Rashid strongly advocated for key infrastructure projects in North Kashmir with Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways. The discussion centered on the urgent need for all-weather connectivity through the construction of Karnah, Machil, and Gurez Tunnels, as well as critical road networks linking remote regions.
Er Rashid highlighted the severe isolation faced by these areas due to heavy snowfall, which cuts them off from the rest of the country for nearly six months every year. He stressed that these tunnels would not only improve socio-economic conditions but also strengthen national integration by ensuring year-round access.
Beyond the tunnels, Er Rashid pushed for the Lolab-Bandipora road connectivity and the Takipora Lolab-Sopore road, which he argued would enhance regional trade, transport, and accessibility for thousands of residents.
Responding to these demands, Minister Nitin Gadkari confirmed that work on the Karnah Tunnel has already begun and assured that the remaining proposals would be taken up with the Defence Ministry for further consideration.
In addition, Er Rashid demanded ₹200 crore for National Highway upgrades and other critical road infrastructure in North Kashmir, emphasizing the urgent need for modernization and development. Minister Gadkari assured full government support, reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to boosting infrastructure in remote areas.
The meeting signals a potential breakthrough in addressing North Kashmir’s long-standing connectivity issues, with hopes pinned on swift implementation of the proposed projects.
