Farooq Abdullah Questions Government’s Claims on Kashmir’s Peace After Kulgam Attack

"If Militancy Has Ended, Why Do Such Attacks Still Happen?" Asks farooq Abdullah".

Srinagar, February 4, 2025 –  Farooq Abdullah has strongly criticized the central government’s claims of ending militancy in the region after the brutal attack on a retired army man and his family in Kulgam. The National Conference (NC) leader questioned how such incidents could still occur if terrorism had truly been eliminated from Kashmir.

The attack, which took place in the Behibagh area of Kulgam district, resulted in the tragic death of retired army personnel Manzoor Ahmad Wagay, while his wife and 13-year-old niece sustained injuries. Militants opened fire on the family, sending shockwaves across the Valley and raising concerns about the security situation.

Speaking to the media, Farooq Abdullah said, “The government keeps telling the nation that militancy has ended in Kashmir, that peace has returned. But if that were true, why do we keep witnessing such attacks? Why are innocent civilians still being targeted?”

He accused the administration of misleading the public with hollow claims while ground realities tell a different story. He demanded accountability from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and urged authorities to intensify efforts to protect citizens, especially those vulnerable to militant threats.

Opposition leaders argue that sporadic militant attacks indicate a failure to fully dismantle terrorist networks.

Meanwhile, security forces have launched a massive cordon-and-search operation in Kulgam to track down the attackers. Authorities have assured swift action but have yet to make any arrests.

The central government, which has often highlighted its counterterrorism successes, now faces renewed scrutiny over its handling of the situation.

As tensions rise, residents of Kulgam and surrounding areas remain on edge. Many echo Abdullah’s concerns, questioning whether Kashmir is truly as peaceful as the government claims. “We need action, not just statements. We need security, not just political speeches,” said a local resident.

With yet another attack claiming innocent lives, Kashmiris are left wondering—has militancy really ended, or is the government just trying to bury the truth?
