Honoring the Birth Anniversary of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) – The Standard-Bearer of Karbala(Alamdaar)

"Bab al-Hawaij" (the Door to Fulfilling Needs)
Today marks the birth anniversary of Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (A.S.), the valiant standard-bearer of Karbala and the embodiment of loyalty, bravery, and sacrifice. Born on 4th Sha’ban 26 AH (647 CE) in Medina, Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) was the beloved son of Imam Ali (A.S.) and Bibi Ummul Banin (S.A.). His birth was a moment of great joy in the household of Ahlul Bayt, as he would later become one of the greatest heroes in Islamic history.

Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) was blessed with an exceptional lineage. His father, Imam Ali (A.S.), was the gateway to knowledge and the most courageous warrior in Islamic history. His mother, Bibi Ummul Banin (S.A.), came from an honorable Arab lineage known for its valor and loyalty. From a young age, Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) was raised in the shadow of his father’s wisdom and his brother Imam Hussain (A.S.)’s spiritual leadership.

Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) is best remembered for his unwavering loyalty to Imam Hussain (A.S.) in the battle of Karbala (680 CE). He stood as the protector of Ahlul Bayt and their mission. Despite the extreme thirst and hardships, Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) never wavered in his duty.

The most poignant moment of his life was when he sought water for the thirsty children of Imam Hussain (A.S.). Despite reaching the Euphrates River, he did not drink a drop, remaining steadfast in his devotion to his brother and the cause of Islam. While returning with water, he was ambushed, his arms were severed, and he was martyred in a heart-wrenching manner. His final words reflected his ultimate loyalty:

"My brother Hussain! Forgive me, for I could not bring water to the children!"

The life of Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) teaches us several valuable lessons:

1. Loyalty and Sacrifice – He remained dedicated to Imam Hussain (A.S.) till his last breath.

2. Bravery and Strength – He was known as "Bab-ul-Hawaij" (the door to granting wishes) due to his intercession and strength.

3. Selflessness – Even in extreme thirst, he put the needs of others before himself.

4. Faith and Submission – He fully surrendered to the divine mission of Imam Hussain (A.S.).

Even today, Hazrat Abbas (A.S.) remains an eternal symbol of courage and devotion. His shrine in Karbala, Iraq, is a place of pilgrimage where millions seek his intercession. His legacy continues to inspire Muslims and all those who value justice, faith, and sacrifice.

On this blessed occasion of his birth anniversary, let us reflect on his exemplary life and strive to embody his values in our daily lives. May Hazrat Abbas (A.S.)’s noble example guide us toward righteousness and steadfast faith.
