J&K Post-370: Only Unemployment, No Progress – NC MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi Calls Out the "False Narrative"

"J&K Was Better Than Other States Before Article 370 Abrogation," Says Mehdi
Srinagar: In a scathing attack on the government's claims of development in Jammu and Kashmir post-abrogation of Article 370, National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has stated that the region has only witnessed rising unemployment and economic distress since the special status was revoked in 2019. Mehdi asserted that before the abrogation, J&K outperformed many other Indian states in crucial indices such as education, human development, and poverty rate.

"Don't mislead people by hiding the truth," Mehdi declared, rejecting claims that Jammu and Kashmir has benefited from the central government's direct rule. He argued that contrary to promises of rapid growth and new opportunities, the region has seen no substantial progress in employment, education, or quality of life.

"Kashmir Was Ahead of Other States Before 2019"

Refuting the government’s justification for scrapping Article 370, Mehdi said that before its revocation, Jammu and Kashmir was ahead of several Indian states in terms of education, health, and poverty alleviation. He pointed out that the Human Development Index (HDI) of J&K was among the best in the country, contradicting claims that the special status was a hindrance to progress.

"Those who say Kashmir needed 'liberation' from Article 370 should look at the numbers. Our educational institutions were producing some of the best minds, our literacy rate was higher than many states, and our social indicators were improving. What have we got in return after 370? Just unemployment and broken promises," he remarked.

Mehdi also addressed the political and communal narratives being pushed post-abrogation, asserting that Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir do not fear the BJP, but they refuse to accept a false portrayal of reality. He accused the ruling party of using the abrogation as a political tool while failing to deliver on promises of economic growth, peace, and stability.

"There was a deliberate attempt to project Kashmiri Muslims as people living in fear. Let me make it clear—we do not fear BJP or any political force. But what we fear is the attempt to rewrite history and erase the truth. The fact is, Kashmir was better off before 370 was removed," Mehdi stated.

"Where is the Better Future We Were Promised?"

The abrogation of Article 370 was sold as a move that would bring investment, job opportunities, and a new era of prosperity. However, according to Mehdi, the ground reality tells a different story. Unemployment has surged, businesses have suffered, and young people are struggling to find opportunities.

"If things were truly better, where are the new jobs? Where is the massive investment we were promised? Why do Kashmiris still feel abandoned and ignored?" he questioned.

Aga Ruhullah Mehdi's statements challenge the dominant narrative that Jammu and Kashmir has benefited post-Article 370 abrogation. His words resonate with many in the region who feel that the promises made to them have not been fulfilled. As J&K continues to grapple with economic challenges, Mehdi's remarks serve as a reminder that development must be measured in real progress, not just political rhetoric.
