JKCSF Demands Immediate Release of MP Engineer Rashid to Uphold Democracy

"Calls for Justice, Representation, and Humanitarian Relief for Political Detainees".

Srinagar, February 4, 2025: The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF), led by Chairman Abdul Qayoom Wani, has made an urgent appeal for the release of Engineer Rashid, an elected Member of Parliament, to ensure his rightful participation in legislative proceedings. In a strong statement, JKCSF emphasized that barring an elected representative from fulfilling his constitutional duty is a direct suppression of the democratic will of the people.

"Democracy thrives when elected voices are heard in Parliament. Engineer Rashid was chosen by the people to represent their concerns at the national level, and his continued absence weakens the very foundation of democratic governance," said Wani.

The forum has urged authorities to ensure Rashid's participation in Parliament, stressing that denying him access undermines the legitimacy of the democratic process and deprives his constituents of representation in crucial policy decisions.

In addition, JKCSF has called for an expedited legal review of all political detainees, emphasizing that justice should not be delayed or denied. The forum has also appealed for the humanitarian relocation of elderly, ailing, and female prisoners to Srinagar jails, ensuring their access to medical care and family visits.

"True democracy is not just about elections; it is about ensuring that every voice is heard, justice is delivered in time, and human dignity is protected," Wani asserted.

The JKCSF has urged the government to act in the spirit of justice, democracy, and humanity, reinforcing that silencing elected representatives and denying basic rights to detainees erodes public trust in democratic institutions.
