Kashmiri Engineer Sentenced to 31 Years in Saudi Jail for ‘Cyber Crimes’

Abdul Rafi Baba’s case pending in Supreme Court after appeal leads to harsher punishment

Srinagar: Kashmiri engineer Abdul Rafi Baba, who was arrested in Saudi Arabia two years ago, has been sentenced to 31 years in prison on charges related to cyber crimes and terror activities. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Baba was initially sentenced to 11 years, but after an appeal by both him and the public prosecution, the appeal court extended the sentence to 31 years.

Under Secretary Bibhuti Nath Pandey stated that Baba’s case is now pending in Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court. He also confirmed that consular access was provided to Baba multiple times between 2021 and 2024. Officials reported that Baba remains in contact with his family in India, calling them weekly, and is in good health with no complaints about food or shelter.

Baba was convicted for allegedly circulating objectionable videos on social media, which were linked to terror-related activities. His family and legal representatives are hoping for a reconsideration of the verdict in the Supreme Court.
