Srinagar, Feb 3:National Conference (NC) MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has taken a firm stand against any association with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), declaring that he and his party will not commit the "sin" of aligning with the saffron party. Emphasizing his commitment to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehdi asserted that he will fight against any forces attempting to suppress their rights.
In a powerful statement, Mehdi made it clear that his electoral victory was never about merely seeking statehood for J&K but about a much larger battle—the restoration of Article 370. "Restoring statehood was never in my mind when I contested elections. The fundamental right of Kashmiris is the restoration of Article 370, and the central government must fulfill that obligation," he said.
Lashing out at the BJP’s policies in Kashmir, Mehdi vowed to resist any attempt that undermines the region’s special identity. "We cannot even think of committing the sin of going close to the BJP. Our promises are with the people, and we will uphold them at any cost," he asserted.
His remarks come at a time when political uncertainty looms large over Jammu and Kashmir. While some regional leaders have softened their stance on engagement with the BJP-led central government, Mehdi's unwavering opposition signals a hardline approach within the National Conference.
In a direct challenge to the current political framework, Mehdi also said he is ready to break any "Nazam" (system) that suppresses people's rights. "This is not just about governance; it is about justice, dignity, and the constitutional rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. No force can silence our voice," he said
Mehdi’s fiery remarks could intensify the already complex political dynamics in the region. While some political leaders advocate for dialogue with New Delhi, Mehdi’s position reinforces the demand for restoring Article 370 before any meaningful engagement can take place.
His words reflect growing frustration among Kashmiris who view the abrogation of Article 370 as an assault on their identity and autonomy. As J&K moves towards a new political phase, Mehdi’s defiant stance is likely to shape the larger discourse on the region’s future.
With political temperatures rising, it remains to be seen how his party leadership and other stakeholders in Kashmir respond to his call for an uncompromising battle for the restoration of special status.
