Medical negligence is becoming an increasingly distressing issue in Kashmir, with frequent incidents shaking public trust in the healthcare system. From extracting a healthy tooth instead of the infected one to mistakenly cutting a girl's tongue tie instead of treating a lip cyst, such errors expose a worrying trend of carelessness in medical practice. These are not minor mistakes but serious lapses that can cause irreversible harm to patients and their families.
The fundamental duty of a doctor is to "do no harm." Yet, cases like these indicate a blatant disregard for patient safety. While doctors are human and errors can occur, the frequency and severity of such mistakes raise concerns about the quality of training, ethical responsibility, and accountability in Kashmir’s medical institutions. Are hospitals conducting thorough checks before procedures? Are doctors being held accountable for their negligence? Or are patients left to suffer while those responsible continue their practice unchecked?
One of the biggest problems in Kashmir’s healthcare system is the lack of strict monitoring and accountability. Many cases of medical negligence go unreported or unresolved because patients, often from poor or less-informed backgrounds, do not have the means to fight against powerful hospital authorities. Even when cases do surface, consequences for negligent doctors remain weak. A temporary suspension is not enough—there must be stricter punishments to prevent such errors in the future.
Moreover, the government and medical institutions need to prioritize reforms in patient care. Regular skill assessments, better oversight mechanisms, and stronger legal actions against negligent practitioners should be implemented. Patients deserve to be treated with dignity and care, not to become victims of reckless mistakes.
Kashmir’s healthcare system needs immediate introspection. A few bad doctors should not be allowed to tarnish the reputation of an entire profession. But unless serious steps are taken to prevent such incidents, the fear of medical negligence will continue to haunt patients, and trust in healthcare will only deteriorate further.
