Karnah, Kupwara(TKG) – March 5, 2025: The residents of the special subdivision Karnah in North Kashmir’s Kupwara district have been enduring a relentless crisis, with no electricity for the past eight days and the crucial Sadhana Pass remaining closed due to heavy snowfall. The situation has turned dire as dead bodies remain stranded in Kupwara, with no subsidized chopper service available to transport them to their native villages.
Despite repeated appeals from locals, the administration has failed to restore power or provide an alternative means of transport. The lack of electricity has left thousands of residents in distress, facing freezing temperatures without heating facilities. The absence of a subsidized chopper service has further aggravated the crisis, leaving the bereaved families helpless, unable to perform last rites for their loved ones.
Every year, the closure of Sadhana Pass during harsh winters brings Karnah to a standstill. Yet, the administration seems unprepared, failing to put proactive measures in place before the crisis unfolds. The question remains: Why does the administration wait for a disaster to strike before taking action?
Local residents and civil society members have expressed their anger, demanding immediate intervention. They are urging authorities to restore power supply, provide emergency transport services, and ensure that essential commodities reach the region before another catastrophe unfolds.
The people of Karnah are not just battling harsh weather; they are battling administrative apathy. It is high time the government wakes up and delivers on its promises before the crisis deepens further.
