Sahar Khan: Srinagar’s Human Alarm Keeping Ramadan Tradition Alive

As the holy month of Ramadan graces Srinagar, the rhythmic drumbeats of the Sahar Khan fill the pre-dawn silence, awakening residents for Sehri (pre-fast meal). A living symbol of Kashmir’s rich heritage, Sahar Khan walks through the streets, beating his drum and reciting soulful Naat Sharief, ensuring people rise in time to begin their fast.

According to the News Agency—Srinagar News Observer (SNO) For centuries, this tradition has remained an integral part of Ramadan in Kashmir, long before alarm clocks and mobile reminders existed. Yet, even in today’s digital age, many still rely on the Sahar Khan, not just as a wake-up call but as a cultural and spiritual experience.

"The beats of the drum before dawn evoke a deep sense of nostalgia and faith. It reminds us of our roots and brings the community together," says an elderly resident from Downtown Srinagar.

Despite the passage of time, the Sahar Khan continues to uphold this timeless tradition, ensuring that the spirit of Ramadan in Kashmir remains as vibrant as ever.—(SNO)
