Amid Covid 19 Northern Command To Take Care of Former Army Personnel

CNS Desk, May 3: The Northern Command of the Indian Army is setting up a robust support system to take care of its former personnel and their families in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh in the wake of the worsening COVID-19 situation in the country.

A defence spokesperson said Northern Command chief Lt Gen Y K Joshi has issued necessary directions to the formations for this.

A network of nodal officers has been put into place to ensure that medical support and appropriate care is pro-actively provided to veterans and their families, he said.

The emphasis is on the dictum "one for all and all for one", whereby collective effort becomes the key to success in the war against the second wave of COVID-19, the spokesperson said.

"Strict adherence to protocols and timely medical response in support of patients who get critical is the cornerstone of the Northern Command's strategy", he said.

Contact details of the nodal officers have been widely circulated, the spokesman said.

Helpline numbers shared and publicised through different media are being manned 24x7.(CNS)

In GMC Anantnag, COVID-19 admissions triple in a week, 16 die*

Anantnag, May 2: In Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, the number of COVID-19 infected hospitalisations have gone up by three times in a week.

With a 50-year-old brought dead to the hospital today, the number of mortalities reported during the week reached 16.

“We had 16 patients admitted in the isolation ward till last week and today the number has reached 60,” Medical Superintendent (MS) of the hospital, Dr Muhammad Iqbal told Greater Kashmir.

He said that the patients were suffering from bilateral pneumonia, and many among them had co-morbidities,

“We are getting patients from every age group even as young as 25,” the MS said.

The hospital has designated 70 beds for COVID-19 patients with high-flow oxygen being provided by a 100 Lpm plant made functional recently.

“Around 100 patients have been discharged after getting treatment since the second wave started,” the MS said.

He said, 16 deaths were also reported in the hospital.

“A 50-year-old man was today brought dead to the hospital. His samples later returned positive for coronavirus,” a medic said.

He said had the patient gone for testing once he got symptoms and then started treatment immediately, he might have survived.

“What we have been observing is that 50 percent of the deaths of infected patients are occurring within 72 hours of admission in hospitals. This clearly indicates that the patients only turn to hospitals once they get severely sick,” ” a medic said.

He said that the observation, early treatment, and timely referral of patients could save many a lives.

“As soon as anyone gets severe symptoms, he should come for consultation to the COVID-19 OPD of the hospital,” a medic suggested.

He said that the patients could also seek advice by dialing the numbers of the doctors already provided by the hospital administration.

“Many of the sick patients die at home without even being tested for the virus. So, they are not being counted as COVID-19 deaths,” the medic said

Meanwhile, 10 infected patients are undergoing treatment at Emergency and Trauma Hospital Bijbehara designated as COVID-19 hospital by the government last week.

However, the 110-bedded hospital is running without a high-flow oxygen plant as it is yet to be made functional.

“The Mechanical Engineering department is on the job and we are expecting the plant to be functional in a week’s time,” Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Anantnag Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said.

He said, as of now, they were giving high-flow oxygen to the admitted patients with bulk oxygen cylinders. “We have 82 bulk cylinders, 100 medium-sized and 28 concentrators at our disposal,” the CMO said.—(GK)

A discreet unit inside the Guantanamo Bay restriction local area that fell crumbling, has now been closed and the prisoners from the areas were moved to another office on the American base in Cuba, the U.S. military said on Sunday.

Prisoners from Camp 7 were moved to Camp 5 “safely and without scene,” anyway didn’t say when the trade occurred. Camp 5, which was for the most part empty, is near Camp 6, where various detainees are held, in order to “increase operational capability and ampleness”.

Miami-based Southern Command, which directs the confinement local area at the southeastern edge of Cuba, didn’t say the quantity of prisoners were moved. Specialists have as of late said around 14 men were held in Camp 7. There are 40 prisoners at Guantanamo.

Camp 7 opened in December 2006 for prisoners as of late held in an association of secret CIA imprisonment workplaces, routinely insinuated as “dim objections,” where they were presented to savage questioning systems. The military ran it under a simultaneousness with CIA, and Southern Command said understanding workplaces were related with the trade.

The military for the longest time did not receive the region of Camp 7 on the base and has never allowed essayists to see inside the workplace. Specialists had said that unit, which was never proposed to be interminable, had fundamental issues and ought to have been superseded, anyway the Pentagon dropped plans to search for money for the turn of events.

Among those held at Camp 7 were the five prisoners blamed for war bad behaviors for their alleged positions organizing and offering vital assistance for the September 11, 2001, mental aggressor attacks.

President Joe Biden has said he intends to close Guantanamo, yet that would require support from Congress to move a couple of prisoners to the U.S. for starter or confinement.

COVID may have doubled poverty in india, says pew study

India’s middle class may have shrunk by a third due to 2020’s pandemic-driven recession, while the number of poor people — earning less than ₹150 per day — more than doubled, according to an analysis by the Pew Research Center. In a comparison, Chinese incomes remained relatively unshaken, with just a 2% drop in the middle class population, it found.

The report, released on Thursday, uses World Bank projections of economic growth to estimate the impact of COVID-19 on Indian incomes. The lockdown triggered by the pandemic resulted in shut businesses, lost jobs and falling incomes, plunging the Indian economy into a deep recession. China managed to avoid a contraction, although growth slowed, the report said.

“The middle class in India is estimated to have shrunk by 3.2 crore in 2020 as a consequence of the downturn, compared with the number it may have reached absent the pandemic,” said the report, defining the middle class as people with incomes of approximately ₹700-1,500 or $10-20 per day.

“Meanwhile, the number of people who are poor in India (with incomes of $2 or less a day) is estimated to have increased by 7.5 crore because of the COVID-19 recession. This accounts for nearly 60% of the global increase in poverty,” the report added, estimating an increase from almost 6 crore to 13.4 crore poor people. It also noted the record spike in MGNREGA participants as proof that the poor were struggling to find work.

The vast majority of India’s population fall into the low income tier, earning about ₹150 to 700 per day. Pew’s projections suggest this group shrank from 119.7 crore to 116.2 crore per day, with about 3.5 crore dropping below the poverty line.

The middle income group is likely to have decreased from almost 10 crore to just 6.6 crore, while the richer population who earn more than ₹1,500 a day also fell almost 30% to 1.8 crore people.

In contrast, China’s middle class is likely to see a miniscule dip of just one crore, while the number of poor people may have gone up by 10 lakh, according to the report.

Pew warned that the situation may actually be worse than estimated. “The methodology in this analysis assumes that incomes change at the same rate for all people,” it explained. “If the COVID-19 recession has worsened inequality, the increase in the number of poor is likely greater than estimated in this analysis, and the decrease in the number who are high income is likely less than estimated. The middle class may have shrunk by more than projected,”
